A great deal is demanded from boards, who work in a different way to executive teams. They need to be highly efficient and effective as the Directors spend less time with each other and may not know each other as well.

The unique demands of board work

At critical moments, boards come together, sometimes under pressure, and must find the right solution for the company and its shareholders with great accountability and reputation at stake.

For much of the time the board acts as a critical friend to the CEO and their executive team and provides governance assurance to shareholders. The signals and dynamics in board communications and ways of working can at times be both more subtle and at other times more robust.
